Toyota bZ4X Virtual Production
Partnering with Droix.Studio, I crafted three Unreal Engine environments for an LED volume, delivering seamless digital backdrops that elevated the cinematic look of a fast-paced Toyota of Hollywood shoot.
Virtual environments were created in Unreal Engine 5 to ensure real-time performance and seamless integration with live-action footage. Lighting was carefully refined alongside producers and the creative team to support the narrative and visual style. All virtual environments were captured in a single day, including additional footage for the ad’s closing scenes, which appear in the final product.
For the castle environment, multiple variations were delivered to give the director
flexibility in shaping atmosphere and tone.
The moon environment needed to feel vast and realistic using minimal elements. With only the sun as light, shadows followed natural physics. Scale, detail, and camera work emphasized space, while Earth’s view anchored the scene.
The canyon scene showed how virtual production makes the impossible safe. A risky climber shot was recreated in Unreal Engine with physical foregrounds, allowing a dramatic, controlled studio capture that preserved scale and tension without danger.
To wrap things up, a short behind-the-scenes piece was assembled to capture the pace and focus of the shoot. It offers a glimpse into how departments worked in sync, with art, tech, and production aligning in real time to bring each setup to life. A brief look at the collaboration and problem-solving that shaped the final result.
